How to Cut & Finish Bottles
Best Ever Glass Bottle Cutting & Sanding Machine 2.0
At What’s New Johnny the unique one of a kind wind chimes and bottle candles have been created by using up-cycled wine, liquor, and special glass bottles. Our saying is: ‘If you’re going to make it, make it nice’
The finished glass wind chime and bottle candles are made using Irish Whisky Bottles.
A Red Oak hardwood knocker provides that pleasing wind chime sound.
Note: Any of the Chime Bottles can also be used as a Bottle Candle by using an Air-Flow Base.
This is your chance to start your own business (for very little money), creating unique chimes, bottle candles etc to sell at street fairs, on Pinterest, Etsy, Facebook, etc. Low cost and easy as pie!
Label Removing
The glue is the problem.
I need to remove labels & glue with elbow grease and denatured alcohol. Not so easy but you shouldn’t cut the bottles with the labels on, because the glue will gum up the scoring tool. Super hot water helps.

The All New Glass Bottle Cutting and Sanding Machine
The All New Glass Bottle Cutting and Sanding Machine is a DIY project from What's New Johnny. It’s very easy to build by following the complete plans including detailed illustrations, color photos, a resource list, and an assembly video. The time to build is about 30 hours using simple hand tools. The DIY plans for the machine will be available February 10th on our website.
Hot & Cold Bottle Separation
Separation of the bottle at the score line.
- Almost 100%
- Quick & easy
- Reduces working loss
Now the easy part… separating each bottle.
I didn’t realize how hard this would be. I would have to shock/crack at the score line. A hot plate, pot of boiling water with cover, and a bucket of water with ice. The next step should be easy, Dunk the bottle in boiling water and then then into the ice water. The darn thing just shattered. Perhaps I’ll put o-rings above and below the score line. This worked better but not good, some had cracks and some shattered.
Next I carefully rapped the bottle with vinyl electrical tape just above the score line, dipped the bottle in the hot water just to the line then into the ice water… it cracked right where I wanted.
Success! Now I only have to remove the vinyl tape and glue.
